Pregnancy and Omega 3 Fats

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fats required for optimal human life and function. Some may be familiar with the components of omega 3 fats known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Nutritional research is both compelling and poignant with regard to the fact that many of the health problems experienced by Americans and any other Americanized culture has it’s genesis in part as result of little to no Omega 3 fats in the diet. It is important to point out the FACT that flaxseed oil does not provide the important EPA and DHA so required by the human body.

Pregnant women, should and without fail make certain that they are receiving adequate daily doses of omega 3 fatty acids ( collectively referred too as EFA’s) in their diets. The human brain is a major consumer of EFA’s. An adequate intake of EFA’s is essential to the overall development of the human fetus. EFA’s are absolutely required in order to form the brain, nervous system and retina of the eye. It is felt that low to absent levels of EFA’s may contribute to premature births and/or low birth weights.

The body can and will try to manufacture the fatty acids it requires to survive and function at an optimal level. However, this has proven to be a sloppy and futile conversion at best. The last three months of pregnancy is when the nervous system of the fetus experiences rapid development. The brain and liver accumulates EFA’s in mega proportions. Given the fetus does not have the biological mechanisms to produce its own EFA’s, it MUST come through the diet via the mother. This also puts the fetus in a position to substitute with other inferior fatty acids not meant to be used for this critical stage of development. As a result, these deprived and malnourished babies are at a high risk for developing learning disorders, vision problems and other cognitive issues.

It is important to note that just recently manufacturers of infant formulas now have added supplemental EFA’s. It goes without saying, the best form of EFA’s are derived from cold water fish. A diet which includes salmon, cod, mackerel and sardines is inarguably protective of both mother and baby. Fish oil supplements may also be purchased at the local health food store. Whatever modality you choose, please be certain to insure that EFAs are a regular part of mother and baby’s diet.
